Newquay Beer Festival 2020

Cancellation Notice

Dear supporters,

The organisers of this year’s Newquay Beer Festival, Towan Blystra Lions Club, have announced that the eighth annual event, due to take place in September, has been cancelled.

Speaking about the decision, which was made by members of the club having taken account of the COVID-19 situation, festival co-director Lion Andy Hannan said: “It is very sad as this great event has been the source of raising more than £50,000 for local good causes since we started in 2013.

However, our event relies heavily on sponsorship which, for obvious reasons, we have not sought to attract in such a difficult economic climate.

Public safety in what is normally a busy and close-knit environment is, however, our primary concern. We have been in regular contact with the owners of Hendra Holiday Park who are so supportive in hosting the event every year. We have jointly explored alternative options but, with the uncertainty surrounding a potential second spike at the end of the summer and the possibility of local lockdowns being enforced, we do not believe, as a charity, we can responsibly take the risk of a late cancellation and making a loss.

Andy went on: “We know what a disappointment this will be to our hundreds of local supporters and those who visit every year from further afield. We would like to thank the bands and artistes who always give their talents so willingly and free of charge to help others for their forbearance while we have been deciding whether to go ahead. Hopefully we will be back at Hendra even bigger and better in 2021 but, for 2020, I am sorry to have had to announce this disappointing news.”

The festival would have taken place over Fri 25 to Sun 27 September and the proposed date for 2021 will be announced in due course.
